The Institute's medical-scientific project for 2008-2012 indicates the strategic choices that are being made for the new hospital, Toulouse Oncopole, that is scheduled to open in 2013. The current project is focused on personalising care at all stages of a disease by taking into account each patient's characteristics and the biological classification of their tumour. The Institute is one of the key supporters of the Toulouse Oncopole. The idea of this project is to create an international centre of excellence in care, training, research and economic development. Our teams work very closely with the national federation of cancer research centres, the CHU in Toulouse and numerous other international partners.
The project goals are as follows:
Innovative care
- Create a structured medical organisation through the use of a system of therapeutic and research departments. Set up multidisciplinary organisational committees to strengthen the coordination of care. By using this system the same group of specialists monitors all the stages of a patient's care from the first consultation until they return home. Committees bring together all relevant disciplines in one location: surgeon, oncologist, radiotherapist, image technician, pathologist, researcher and supportive care professional.
- Organise special oncogeriatrics care.
- Increase the number of services on offer for oncogeriatrics to meet the growing demands from families for more targeted screening.
- Take action at the earliest stage of the disease possible. To improve the effectiveness of treatments, it is imperative to respond quickly to requests for taking care of patients. Technological advances make it possible to take action immediately in order to diagnose and implement treatments. The Institute has put in place “fast processes” for breast and skin diseases.
- Develop outpatient care so that where possible patients can receive hospital treatment and be discharged on the same day.
Improve the quality of care
- Personalise support for patients and their friends and relatives:
- develop the supportive care currently on offer;
- listen to the patient and their friends and relatives in order to provide better information.
- Improve the quality of care and the safety of the patient's treatment program
- Closely involve the patient in decision making processes.
- Educate patients so that they understand their illness and their treatment in order to optimise the outcome of treatments.
Educate and Train
Distribute best practices, develop new training courses based on our strengths: specialised experience in cancer treatment, expertise and social skills, ability to anticipate new practices and methods of care.
Focus on the care – research continuum
- Provide easier access for patients to the latest medical and technological advances.
- Develop early clinical studies on new treatments.
- Develop customised treatment and work on predictive factors for response or relapse (Identification card for tumours, double biopsy strategy etc.)
- Focus on bio-clinical interface projects and create the Biological Resources Centre.
- Focus on research projects in collaboration with national and international partners.
