The Claudius Regaud Cancer Centre was founded in 1923 by Professor Théodore Marie based on the set up of the Radium Institute in Paris.

The Toulouse Cancer Centre was the first regional centre to have a purpose built area for cancer treatment. It orginally housed 45 hospital beds.

Decree from the 4th June 1923 stipulates that:

" ... The premises will be arranged in such a way that they can accommodate: a consultation department for non-hospitalised patients suffering from cancer, a hospital department for people suffering from cancer (men and women), a treatment department (surgery, radiotherapy - internal and brachytherapy), a teaching department and scientific research..."

This organisation was the basis for the CHU which was founded some 50 years later.
